Events

Day events - Conferences, training and courses

You may cancel or amend a booking within 14 days of receiving your order confirmation email. In this situation you will receive a full refund. Cancellations and changes to orders after this period and up to 1 month prior to the event will incur a £5.00 charge which reflects the administration costs incurred. After this time, no refund is available.

Residential events

Deposits may be required for some events. Where a deposit is required, these are non-refundable.

If you amend a residential event booking after 14 days of receiving your order confirmation email, an administration charge of £5.00 will be applied per attendee amendment.

Time before event Refund
10 weeks before the event 100% (deposit payment is not refundable)
5-9 weeks before the event 60% (deposit payment is not refundable)
Less than 4 weeks before the event
No refund

It is recommended that if you are concerned about the possibility of not being able to attend, you should consider having insurance to cover the costs of cancellations.

BRF is not responsible for the costs of your travel arrangements.

Events cancelled by BRF

From time to time we may need to cancel an event. This may happen due to the event no longer being viable (e.g. insufficient bookings; a speaker cancels and cannot be replaced). Under these circumstances we will give a full refund, including a deposit refund (if applicable). BRF is not responsible for the costs of your travel arrangements and/or accommodation under these circumstances.

Changes to events

From time to time details of an event are updated - for example speakers, venue, programme and so on. We will try to notify all attendees of any such changes as soon as possible - please do ensure your contact details are up to date when you book.

Postage and packaging refunds

In keeping with the Consumer Contracts Regulations, we will refund basic postage and packaging along with your order. If you paid for a higher level of P&P (e.g. Airmail, courier) then we will only refund the cost of basic P&P.

If you part cancel an order, we will only refund the difference between the P&P costs of your complete order and your remaining order.

Note: shipping costs are calculated after promotions. See the promotions section for more information.

Example 1 - UK order

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £7.99 1 £7.99
Book 2 £7.99 1 £7.99
Subtotal £15.98
UK standard shipping £3.00
Total £18.98

With an order value of £15.98, shipping costs of £3.00 apply.

If one book at £7.99 is cancelled, the order subtotal becomes £7.99 and our shipping costs are still £3.00, so no shipping refund will be issued.

The total refund would be £7.99.

Example 2 - UK order

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £3.99 1 £3.99
Book 2 £7.99 1 £7.99
Subtotal £11.98
UK standard shipping £3.00
Total £14.98

With an order value of £11.98, shipping costs of £3.00 apply.

If the £7.99 book is cancelled, the order subtotal becomes £3.99 and our shipping costs are now £2.00.

The total refund would be £7.99 + £1.00 shipping refund (the difference the bands of £3.00 and £2.00).

Example 3 - Overseas order

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £7.99 1 £7.99
Book 2 £7.99 1 £7.99
Subtotal £15.98
Overseas shipping £9.00
Total £24.98

Overseas shipping costs are calculated at the point of checkout based on the weight of your order. In this example sending two books to France the postage was £5.35.

The total refund would be £21.33.

Example 4 - Subscription UK

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Subscription 1 £18.00 1 £18.00
Subtotal £18.00
Shipping nil
Total £18.00

Subscriptions already include shipping costs.

If the subscription is cancelled before any issues are mailed, a full refund is applicable, in this example £18.00.

If the subscription is cancelled part way through the period, for example a 1-year subscription to New Daylight and one book has been issued, the refund is adjusted. In this example the refund would be £12.00.

Postage and packaging discounts & thresholds

If you part cancel an order that qualified for free P&P, either by reaching the threshold for free shipping in our shipping costs, or by using a promotional code for free shipping, then any remaining order will be subject to the shipping costs that would have applied if it were the complete order.

Example 5 - UK order

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £7.99 2 £15.98
Book 2 £7.99 2 £15.98
Subtotal £31.96
UK standard shipping FREE
Total £31.96

This UK order qualifies for free shipping according to our shipping costs.

If one £7.99 book is cancelled then the order subtotal becomes £23.97 and our shipping costs are now £3.00 for the remaining order.

The total refund would be £4.99: £7.99 for the book less the shipping charge of £3.00 for the remaining order.

Promotions and special offers

If you cancel part of an order that contained a special offer, then the cost of the remaining order is calculated again without the removed titles.

Note: shipping costs are calculated after all discounts are removed.

Example 6 - Bulk order

Some products have discounts for bulk orders. In the example below, 25 or more copies had a discount of 10%.

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £2.50 25 £62.50
Subtotal £62.50
Offer - £6.25
UK standard shipping nil
Total £56.25

If three copies were returned, the discount is no longer valid. Refund would be £1.25 (£7.50 refund on returned books less £6.25).

Example 7 - Buy one get one half price offer

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £7.99 1 £7.99
Book 2 £6.99 1 £6.99
Book 3 £5.99 1 £5.99 (half price)
Book 4 £4.99 1 £4.99 (half price)
Subtotal £25.96
Offer - £5.50
UK standard shipping £3.00
Total £23.49

In this example, a buy one get one half price operates across all four titles in the basket. The lowest priced items are discounted by 50%, so the discount comes from half of £4.99 (£2.50) plus half of £5.99 (£3.00) = £5.50.

If the £4.99 book is cancelled, the remaining order looks like this:

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £7.99 1 £7.99
Book 2 £6.99 1 £6.99
Book 3 £5.99 1 £5.99 (half price)
Subtotal £20.97
Offer - £3.00
UK standard shipping £3.00
Total £20.97

Here, there are only three titles left in the buy one get one half price offer, so there is only a single discount of £3.00 (half of the lowest price book in the remaining order).

The refund for the returned book would be £2.49 (the same shipping charges apply as before).

Example 8 - Free copy of book with event and free shipping

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book £4.25 1 £4.25
Event £16.50 1 £16.50
Subtotal £20.75

Offer

- £4.25
UK standard shipping Free in this offer
Total £16.50

In this example, a free book was given (P&P free) when an event ticket was purchased.

The event refund would follow the event cancellation policy.

If the free book has been sent out, the following options are:

  1. Return the book to BRF at your expense
  2. Keep the book and you will be charged the cover price and applicable postage. This could be deducted from the refund of the event.

In this example presuming the cancellation was after 14 days and 11 weeks before the event and you wanted to keep the book: Cost of book £4.25 plus £2.00 postage. Event cancellation admin charge of £5.00. Refund of £5.25 (£16.50 less £6.25 less £5.00).

Example 9 - Use of voucher as part payment

Items ordered Cost per item Quantity Value
Book 1 £6.99 1 £6.99
Book 2 £11.99 1 £11.99
Subtotal £18.98

UK standard shipping

£3.00
Total £21.98
Voucher £-10.00
Amount to pay £11.98

In this example, a voucher of £10 was used at the checkout. This voucher had no minimum spend attached to it but cannot be carried forward.

If this order is cancelled in total within the first 14 days, then a refund of £11.98 is due.

If only book two is cancelled within the first 14 days, then a refund of £11.98 is due. New order total comes to £8.99 (£6.99 + £2.00 P&P), the voucher is then applied to it. The remaining £1.01 of the voucher will not be refunded.
