Here we can encounter the gentle, transformative power of St John's verse and vision.
From the foreword by Bishop Stephen Cottrell

The sixteenth century Spanish mystic John of the Cross is best-known for his reflections on 'the dark night of the soul', as well as his friendship and collaboration with Teresa of Avila to reform the religious communities of their day. This book explores the dramatic events of his life and times, and also his complex and lyrical poetry, showing how all his work pointed to the reality of God's work through him and presence with him, even in the despair of a prison cell.

Transformed by the Beloved invites us to reflect on different aspects of the Christian journey, all of which John considered crucial for growth in faith and depth of spirituality. John's own experience showed this journey to be at times full of longing, because of an experience of God's absence, and at other times full of the most wonderful shouts of joy, because of a profound encounter with Christ. Each chapter ends with suggestions for personal reflection and prayer, with many links to John's poems, new translations of which are included in the book.

From the final chapter

'...when you come face to face with your Creator, God will not be interested in how many books on Christian spirituality you have read, how many church services or Bible studies you have attended, or how successful or unsuccessful you were in your business or career. The Beloved will be interested in how much you loved, how selfless your love was, and how many people you touched with that love. That will be the final test, and that should be the ultimate motivation for life and for living.'

From The Good Bookstall - January 2014

Transformed by the Beloved is a brilliant way to learn and understand more about St John of The Cross and his writings. Particularly, it covers his spiritual poetry as these are used to demonstrate his theology and thoughts within this book.

At the back of the book you do get a selection of his poems, both in their original Spanish and English translations. The book, at only 6.99 is worth it just for these alone. But when you factor in that in point of fact you have eight incredibly good, down to earth but deeply rich, insightful and fulfilling studies dealing with issues at the heart of spiritual formation then this book is a real bargain.

This book can of course be read alone at home, and even all in one sitting. But what a wonder this would be on a 7 day retreat, with the final study on 'love - the beginning and end of the journey' actually being saved for when you return home.

Alternatively if doing a shorter retreat it would be no hardship to read two studies in one day. It would also work as a good house/small group or book club resource and I think there would be many interesting and fruitful conversations borne from it indeed.
