Matthew's Gospel is clear, organised and practical, giving much prominence to Jesus' teaching about lifestyle and relationships. Christian commitment that could reach all areas of life was clearly important to Matthew, who wrote his account close to the time and the places where Jesus lived.

Yet he also had a deeply spiritual message, emphasising how the events of Jesus' birth and life, cross and resurrection, fulfilled Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah, and telling of the Son of God who is 'with you always, to the end of time'.
